Stomach ulcer treatments

Endoscopy: Endoscopy is performed to diagnose, determine the treatment option and treat bleeding ulcers. It is typically performed to treat visible blood vessels bleeding. A probe is passed through an endoscopic tube and either electricity is applied or small clips are used to clot the blood to stop bleeding.

Laparoscopic surgery: The vagus nerve is responsible for acid secretion in the stomach. Sometimes, the vagus nerve is cut to reduce the acid production and it allows the ulcer to heal. This is performed by the laparoscopic procedure.

Laparoscopic Highly Selective Vagotomy: The laparoscopic surgeon will make 4-5 small incisions on the abdomen. Carbon-di-oxide is inflated in the abdomen using a port through one incision. This allows the surgeon to view the inside of the abdomen. A laparoscope is inserted through another incision that contains camera and light through which the surgeon can see the abdomen clearly. Surgical instruments are introduced to other incisions and the vagus nerve is cut. After finishing the procedure, the inflated gas is released out, the incisions are sutured/stapled/covered with a bandage.

Laparoscopic Vagotomy and Pyloroplasty: The laparoscopic surgeon will make 4-5 small incisions on the abdomen. After the Vagotomy, the outlet will be opened, (pyloroplasty) to prevent blockage in future. After completing the procedure, the inflated gas is released out, the incisions are sutured/stapled/covered with a bandage. This procedure and the former are done under general anesthesia.
